I have been watching some disturbing news over the past few weeks and praying that God will intervene in the wickedness of mankind that seems to be wreaking havoc everywhere. I became frustrated because God was not making the evil one back down, but instead matters have gotten worse.
I remembered there was another time, several years ago, that something in the news was getting my dander up. Over several weeks, I kept getting angrier and angrier about it. I talked to the Lord about it, but my soul was still vexed.
I was laying awake in bed one night… couldn’t sleep, and I heard a storm coming. There was thunder way off in the far distance. It kept getting louder and louder, coming closer and closer. When the storm got over our house, the thunder was so loud, it made the windows rattle. It was louder than I have ever heard thunder before. The funny thing was, the louder it got, the calmer I felt. Finally I said, “Well… God is angry now, so I don’t have to be angry anymore.” I turned over, closed my eyes, and fell into a deep sleep despite the loud thunder outside.
This morning the Lord led me over to Ezekiel 14:12-23 where He was having a conversation with the prophet Ezekiel about the children of Israel being sent to Babylon. God was furious with them because of their persistent unfaithfulness, and nothing was going to prevent His wrath from being poured out upon them. God said to the prophet, “When you see their behavior, then you will understand that these things are not being done to Israel without cause.”
On the news there continues to be disastrous reports of war breaking out, economic distress, and COVID19. But when I studied the passage in Ezekiel 14, I was comforted just as God said to the prophet… and just as I was that night when I heard the voice of loud thunder over our house.
I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. Revelation 14:2
God told Ezekiel that He would deliver the righteous from His fury, but the land would be desolate and men would be cut off. He would leave survivors that would come through the exile in Babylon, and through them, He would restore the land once again.
Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be mowed down like grass, and wither as the green herb. Psalm 37:1-2
